The Melt Shear Viscosity of Polypropylene/Glass Bead Composites at High Extrusion Flow Rates
نویسندگان
چکیده
The effects of filler content and its surface treatment with silane coupling agent on the melt shear viscosity of glass bead-filled polypropylene (PP) composites have been investigated using a capillary rheometer at a wide shear rate scope of 150 to 7200 s and temperature range of 160 to 200 C. The melt flow obeys power law, but the slopes of the flow curves have transitions at the shear rate of about 500 s. The melt shear viscosity of the coated glass bead-filled system is somewhat higher than that of the uncoated glass bead-filled system when both were subjected to the same conditions. The dependence of the melt shear viscosity on temperatures can be described with Arrhenius relationship, and the temperature sensitivity of the composite melts is greater than that of pure PP. The melt shear viscosity (ηw ) increases with the volume fraction of the fillers (φf ) at lower shear rates, while the dependence of ηw on φf decreases with the increase of shear rates.

Rheological Behaviour of Injection Moulded Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch Fibre – Polypropylene Composites: Effects of Electron Beam Processing Versus Maleated
In this study, oil palm empty fruit bunch fibres (EFB) reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared by two different methods i.e. physical treatment of the composites using electron beam irradiation and chemical treatment by adding coupling agent such as maleated PP. The composites pellets were then subjected to injection moulding for preparation of test pieces for physical, mechanica...
متن کاملNovel, Synergistic Composites of Polypropylene and Rice Husk Ash: Sustainable Resource Hybrids Prepared by Solid-State Shear Pulverization
Rice husk ash (RHA) is an agrowaste byproduct resulting from the incineration of rice husks for power production; white RHA is 90 wt% or more silica, which makes it a potentially sustainable and inexpensive substitute for commercial (less “green”) silica filler. Past research on polypropylene (PP)-RHA hybrids made by melt processing has yielded modest increments in Young’s modulus, reduced yiel...
متن کاملDispersion and Property Enhancements in Polyolefin/Soy Flour Biocomposites Prepared via Melt Extrusion Followed by Solid-State Shear Pulverization
Biocomposites of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polypropylene (PP) with 5–40wt% soy flour (SF) are produced by two-step single-screw extrusion (SSE) followed by solid-state shear pulverization (SSSP). The SSE-SSSP approach overcomes limitations with melt mixing, e.g poor SF dispersion and degradation, and limitations with single-step SSSP. Microscopy shows that SF is well dispersed in SSE-...
متن کاملElectron beam irradiation method to change polypropylene application: Rheology and thermomechanical properties
Irradiation of polymers is one of the most effective and economical methods for modifying their properties and for changing their applications. In this study, an extrusion grade polypropylene (PP) was treated by electron beam irradiation to produce a PP suitable for injection molding. Irradiation was carried out at different doses (0-80 kGy) under atmosphere air and at ambient temperature. Melt...

Polymers for hot melt extrusion must exhibit thermoplastic characteristics in order to permit the melt extrusion process and they must be stable at extrusion temperatures. Other relevant characteristics are: suitable glass transition temperature (Tg) of 50–180 °C, low hygroscopicity and no toxicity since larger amounts of polymer are used [1]. Extrudability of a polymer is mainly determined by ...
